Yekaterinburg, 9 July — In its second edition, the Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit (GMIS) – a joint initiative of the Ministry of Energy and Industry of the United Arab Emirates and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) – was inaugurated today by the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin. In his opening remarks, the President emphasized the importance of the manufacturing sector and its contribution to achieve global prosperity as well as Russia’s efforts towards the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).

Convened under the theme “nature-inspired technologies”, GMIS is a multi-stakeholder platform that aims to establish a global consensus on the future of manufacturing by bringing together leaders from governments, businesses, and civil society.

During the official keynote panel “The New Era of Manufacturing: Manufacturing, Nature-Inspired Technology and Their Role in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, UNIDO Director General LI Yong noted: “the enormous growth potential of the Fourth Industrial Revolution must be balanced against associated challenges, such as a potential widening of the technology gap between high income and developing countries. GMIS is essential to our discussion and will help us promote inclusive and sustainable industrial development worldwide, and thus attain the Sustainable Development Goals”.

Other distinguished speakers included H.E. Denis Manturov, Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, H.E. Khaldoon Al Mubarak, Group CEO of Mubadala Investment Company, and H.E. Suhail Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Industry of the United Arab Emirates and GMIS Co-Chair. “In line with the innovations brought by Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, the UAE is driving the transformation of its manufacturing sector as it actively aims to prepare for a post-oil era”, said the UAE Minister. “Likewise, Russia’s determination to develop an advanced manufacturing sector using 4IR technologies makes it a perfect fit as the host country for GMIS 2019. President Putin’s attendance at the Summit emphasizes the importance of this global collaborative platform that drives the adoption of innovation to regenerate global economies”.

The Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit will be held over the course of three days alongside INNOPROM, an annual Industrial Trade Fair held in Russia since 2010. GMIS 2019 will see further high-level discussions on themes related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The global gathering of the manufacturing community aims to forecast the future of science, ignite technological transformation, promote enduring partnerships, and inspire the next generation of leaders and innovators to create a road map towards global prosperity and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
