Opportunities for cooperation in the field of alternative energy development in BRICS countries discussed at the Russia-China Investment Fund for Regional Development

On March 15, 2018 was held a meeting between the Director of the UNIDO Centre in Russia Sergey Korotkov and representatives of the Embassy of Brazil and management of the Russia-China Investment Fund for Regional Development, represented by Wang Feng, Chairman of the Board of Directors. During negotiations, conducted at the initiative of the National Research Centre “Kurchatov Institute”, the parties discussed possibilities of cooperation within the framework of projects in BRICS countries, aimed at developing alternative energy sources, including solar and wind power, as well as opportunities for the use of nuclear energy in industry.

The meeting was held as a follow-up to the project „Russian-Brazilian Partnership in Technology and Innovation for Small and Medium Enterprises“, implemented by the UNIDO Centre in support of the 2011 BRICS Summit Declaration on science, technology and innovation cooperation. The project’s objective was to create an infrastructure for the technological information dissemination and to support small and medium enterprises in obtaining funding from organizations such as the Global Environment Facility, development banks, etc.

Russia-China Investment Fund for Regional Development was founded following the visit of the President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping to Moscow. Among the main areas of interest of the Fund are projects in the field of nuclear energy, infrastructure, logistics and new technologies in SOC, EAEU, BRICS countries, projects under “One Belt — One Road” Initiative, and cooperation with Chinese and Russian regions. The main investors are the largest public and private corporations of China.

Following the meeting the parties agreed on continuing cooperation in priority areas.
